'Where The Purple Flowers Grow' was written and recorded during the 2020 quarantine, and is the last batch of songs featuring the original 3 man Royal Horses lineup. At the time of making the record, the band had just come off of three years playing shows nonstop, and were as tight as ever. “Purple Flowers” features a heavier use of studio overdubs than any of the bands other work. Songwriter, Shelby Kemp, said about the album “Purple Flowers represents a pivot point in my approach to writing songs”. This album was a close collaboration between Royal Horses and New Orleans based producer John Michael Early.

lyrics
Cold grey salty water, it laps around my feet.
On a broken seashell highway where the land and ocean meet
And I’m wondering if it chills your heart the way its chilling mine.
A few more hundred miles of driving and we could share a little time.
There’s nothing, nothing but the Carolinas to keep you from my arms.
I’ll drive westward in the morning, through the cities and the pines.
Flying high just like some road-dog, trying to keep myself in line.
Trying to keep my mind on anything but the days that I’ve been counting,
And the days I’ve left to count with you in mind.
There’s nothing, nothing but the Carolinas to keep you from my arms.
I’d swim across the rivers cold, I’d climb the mountains high.
I’d beat a man to death even if he’s twice my size.
I’d claw my way up solid stone until my fingers turn to bone,
Because my heart is waiting on the other side.
I know you’re coming back to me, I know you’re coming home.
I know the day will come when I won’t have to be alone.
I know it in my heart and as I stare out at the sea,
For in my mind there’s nothing in this world but you and me.

For me much of the music Psychedelic Source shares with us feels sacred: mantras for prolonged meditation; inner contemplation leading to outer transformation. Patterns form, shift, reform; endlessly combining and recombining to produce new shining entities, like the essence of life itself. Dave Aftandilian
