about

Royal Horses kick up dust and swiftly gallup into their Color Red debut, “Time Wounds All Heals.” Vocalist/guitarist Shelby Kemp describes the band’s style as Mississippi Pine Stump Jangle, which aptly depicts the group’s journey from Mississippi to Colorado by way of Oklahoma and Kansas. The lyrics tell a tale of spending multiple nights in your early 20s with a dear companion drinking wine and telling stories. Kemp and bandmates Kenny Mann (bass) and Daniel Firth (drums) came to Color Red Studio by way of the recommendation of Chris Spies (Matador! Soul Sounds, Color Red All-Stars) and worked with Eddie Roberts to lock in the lyrics, hone in on the tempo, and ease into the relaxed studio environment. The track is now a staple in their live performances as the band plots their return to Colorado and Color Red Studios.

lyrics

It was a Southern summer and a hot July
Too hot to catch enough fish to fry
So I was upstairs getting pine tree high
With a long legged friend of mine
She was a beauty
She had them cajun thighs
And muddy river water running in her eyes
Cussing and swatting at an old fruit fly
Rolling another and telling me lies
Telling me lies and giving me eyes
Checking the clothes to see if they'd dried
Calling around to find me a ride
And keeping the truth buried deep inside

Girl you’re quite the sore eyed sight to see
Time wounds all and heals these holes in me
Sunshine beats the hell out of the grave
But it does no good when you turn up my way

She lit a fire there on the stove
Produced a pan and wiped her nose
She said around here it pays to stay on your toes
And I said yeah that’s just the way it goes
The conversation drug on and on
She pulled some meat off a chicken bone
I tied my shoes and left alone
In the summer heat I went back home
To find you sitting here in my chair
Licking your lips and touching your hair
And my kitchen cabinets just laid bare
I guess all my work gets me nowhere

(Chorus)

I can’t remember what I came here for
So I pulled my pallet out across the floor
I cursed the day I asked for more
And I passed out to the tapping of your shoe
The sound just made me blue
And I knew right then there was no-one true
So I tuned my heart to a different hue
And I screamed till the sun came through
The sun came through in brilliant rays of light
That warmed the night to day
And reminded me of a different way
To think and sing so I spoke to say

(Chorus)
